Pubs and Bars
The public house (pub) is a recognisable institution in every
British city, town and village, playing a central role in the
leisure industry whether for alcohol consumption, eating out or
live entertainment. One key trend has been the move towards eating
in pubs rather than engaging in 'session drinking', with many who
prefer the latter activity shifting their alcohol consumption into
the home, as take-home drinks prices have fallen relative to pub
prices.
Another trend has been the move to 'bars', included in the title
of this report to ensure there is full coverage of what are defined
in UK law as 'licensed premises' for the purpose of selling alcohol
(for consumption on the premises). Modern bars, café bars or
brasseries have developed in city centres but, on balance, the
consumer is still very much in favour of the traditional pub as a
venue for drinking and, increasingly, for eating out.
