This review looks at the UK market for smart domestic
appliances. It covers awareness, ownership and interest in smart
appliances as well as identifying drivers for change and key
factors influencing this emerging market.
Smart appliances are grouped under the following catergories:
fridge-freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers,
electric ovens, hobs and microwave ovens.
There are several ways of defining a smart appliance, but for
the purposes of this report they include those devices that:
- Can make independent decisions, such as regulating temperature
and humidity to optimise performance
- Can be controlled through voice recognition
- Can be controlled via the internet using smartphones, laptops
or desktop computers
While appliances can be found in the marketplace which currently
fall under one or both of the first two categories, the third
definition given above refers, for the most part, to future
appliances and those currently in development.
